Ohio River Mardi Gras: Medicine For Any Malady

CINCINNATI (TDB) -- Ash Wednesday and ibuprofen go together like accordions and zydeco bands from Louisiana's Cajun parishes. And so it has come to pass that the pre-Lent season roared out like a Category 5 at Jimmy Cafeo's Jefferson Hall on the Ohio River, where some genuine craw fish country musicians rocked in 40 days of repentance with strings of mirth and sounds to stir the soul. No doubt about it, Nathan & The Zydeco Cha Chas spiced up one of the hottest Mardi Gras events this side of New Orleans. Hell, this side of Rio.

Nathan and his talented crew are in the Louisiana Hall of Fame, and it was a coup to lure the BAND into the Cincinnati area for Mardi Gras. Cafeo is a New Orleans buff who is dedicated to bringing nightlife into the Cincinnati area, a task that sometimes seems like he's trying to make both the Ohio and Mississippi rivers flow backward. He pulled it off last night, a gloomy Midwestern Tuesday that glowed bon temps .

Nathan says his music is supposed to put a smile on your face and make you shake what your mama gave you. Exuberance is what he's about. Hopefully he'll return next year to hang it high and hang it low. Now where is that aspirin bottle.
