Here's An Interesting Editorial: Chicago Trib Says Dem Plagiarist Should Resign

CINCINNATI (TBD) --Here's the Chicago Tribune's editorial calling for the resignation of the former Democratic congressman who is now the president of Southern Illinois University. The offense: Plagiarism.

Apparently, it's a big deal to filch somebody else's words. Have any Republicans ever done that in Ohio?

  1. As a die-hard Republican, I can tell you that Jean Schmidt will never receive my vote again.

  2. OMG, Bill, give it up. There's a difference in plagiarizing on a doctoral thesis by a university president, and using common and open campaign literature. I think you're obsessing over the strawberries.

  3. Hi Joe C. --

Tell that to another Joe, a guy named Joe Biden.

Every time I heard him open his mouth I wonder: Did he really say that, or did somebody else say that first.

  5. And yet, I'm not seeing any calls for his resignation on the Daily Bellwether... Curious...

  6. Hi Matt --

Be my guest and be the first to call for Biden's resignation. You might quickly find yourself with a lot of company.

  7. But I'm not the one calling for Jean Schmidt's resignation either...

  8. Bill,

While I agree that whichever staffer prepared the webpage should have gotten permission and given attribution, I hope you do understand that there is a difference between a silly safety bulletin and comments in a major speech. Sadly, plagiarism is as old as politics themselves. Take Kennedy's most famous line "ask not what your country . . . ." That has been traced in speeches by politicians all the way back to Julius Ceasar (and I'm sure he stole it from someone else).
