Cincinnati Chamber's Woman-Owned Biz Of The Year: Adult-Oriented Goods Made It No. 1

CINCINNATI (TDB) -- Apparently, the local prudes took the day off. The Chamber of Commerce has named Pure Romance its woman-owned business of the year. Not bad for a company that markets adult-themed products at house parties, or says the goods it offers online will spice up libidos from foreplay to the Big O. Everything is aimed at female buyers.

For example, there is a beginner's bondage kit that includes wrist and ankle restraints, a soft blindfold, a 10-inch rubber whip, and 44-inches of straps. All for $28. If that's not kinky enough, check out the "double header." Or the "Daddy from the 'Nati." Compared to any human's organ, it must be a Mighty Wurlitzer. It is powered by three AA batteries intended to deliver action in a spot that stimulates more than conversation. Think of women hitting high notes.

Pure Romance is a successful enterprise that has annual sales in excess of $40 million a year. It is in the pink so to speak.

  1. As long as this conmpany's ads don't include the Amish, I am ok with it.

  2. A Cleveland area store of the same type called Ambiance also is run or at least was last I knew by a woman. I think she had been a lawyer but I might be wrong on that. It's a pretty often told business story up here.

  3. Hi Jill --

I love women-owned businesses. But it is a bit amusing that the Chamber in the city that ran Larry Flynt out of town gave such an award to a company that sells sex toys. I guess Flynt was just too hardcore.

  5. Get over it, the city of Cincinnati is much more progressive these days. All the prudes moved to the suburbs.

  6. Anon - I don't know what burbs you are talking about but no women in the burbs sell Tupperware any more, my friend.

  7. Hi Anon and Jill --

Anon, do you mean Phil Burress and CCV? They are headquartered in Sharonville, a northern suburb.

  8. It is great to see more grants and growth in resources supporting women-owned businesses. I recently helped several woman-owned businesses set up new offices. The SBA grants available to women provide great financing terms on purchasing the entire suite of office furniture. Buying from a woman-owned furniture group will not only help you save time and money, but you will gain a design team that will help you create a productive workspace for your organization.
