OH-02 Republican Phil Heimlich: Hold The Mayo, I Just Found Jesus

CINCINNATI (TDB) -- Republican congressional candidate Phil Heimlich's conversion from Judaism to Christianity apparently occurred in a Big Boy restaurant near Detroit in the early 1980s. Heimlich -- a conservative Republican -- is the son of world-famous physician Henry Heimlich. He is courting evangelicals and Christian conservatives in bid to unseat U.S. Rep. Jean Schmidt in the March GOP primary for the seat in Ohio's 2nd Congressional District.

Somebody anonymously e-mailed The Daily Bellwether this November 2003 account from the Topeka, Kan., newspaper about Phil Heimlich's speech to the mayor's prayer breakfast in that city. There is also an audio link to the speech (see below). At the time of his Kansas talk four years ago, Heimlich was a Hamilton County Commissioner in Cincinnati, a post he lost in the 2006 election to Democrat David Pepper.

According to the newspaper's story, Heimlic, he told the prayer breakfast he was at the Michigan Big Boy when he accepted Christ as his savior. He said he had been thinking about the Jews who had become Christians when the faith was started 2000 years ago. The information about Phil Heimlich comes from a web site called Medfraud, which contains unflattering information about Dr. Heimlich and his candidate son. This is an excerpt of what MedFraud has to say about the Big Boy:

"Heimlich's search culminated in 1981 at a Bob's Big Boy restaurant in Michigan, where he said he asked God to forgive him for his mistakes and accepted Christ as his savior.

"Click here for an audio in which Phil describes in detail his religious epiphany in a hamburger restaurant. He says this was in the Detroit suburb of Grosse Point. He says he was in Michigan for a court case, one that supposedly involved a woman he was living with. Phil doesn't say if he took the opportunity to check in with . . . who at the time was either working at the drug mill or under arrest."
