Cleveland Rated 2nd Most Stressful U.S. Metro Area: Ohio's Heart Attack Capital

CLEVELAND (TDB) -- Death by butter in Cleveland and guns in Cincinnati. That's how it looks on this chart, which shows deaths from circulatory system diseases in metro Cleveland are higher than 49 other U.S. communities -- only Pittsburgh has more. The heart attack rate helps makes Cleveland No. 2 in stress behind top-ranked Detroit. Meanwhile, Cincinnati is the nation's 13th most stressful place. Its heart attack rate is lower. But the murder rate in Cincy is worse than Cleveland -- way worse. Cleveland has 16.6 murders per 100,000 residents in the city; Cincinnati has 28.8.

Virginia Beach/Norfolk is rated the nation's least stressful metro area.

  1. In 2007, Cleveland's murder rate was way above Cincy's. In 2006, both cities' murder rates were the same (26.8 per 100,000 residents).

    Cincy, with 332,000 residents, had 68 (down from 89 in 2006), a rate of 20.5 per 100,000.

    Cleveland, with 444,000 residents, had 134 murders (up from 119 in 2006), a rate of 30.2 per 100,000. That's 47% higher than Cincy's.

This would make Cleveland a more solid Number 2 on the BizJournals.com list.

  2. Thanks, Tom. I did not fact check data in the BizJournals chart. Great work and a great catch because you took the time to do so . . . as you often do when it comes to things reported or circulated by the corporate media. I think we all should pick up more of your habit.

  3. Bill,

Are you subtly telling me I should have stayed in Virginia Beach instead of returning to Ohio when I retired? :-)

Separately, the Tidewater region of Virginia is a great area. Traffic is lousy but the weather more than makes up for that.

  4. Bill Sloat,

Thanks. Picking up the habit has negative sleep implications, however.
