Ron Paul Waves Off Ohio Primary |
CINCINNATI (TDB) -- The Republican field has dwindled to a Big 3 amid portents that the GOP presidential herd is disappearing like Doritos at a tailgate party. Most of the candidates failed to file qualifying petitions for Ohio's June 12 primary -- a signal they don't expect to be around by that late date on the primary calendar. Secretary of State John Husted's office sent The Daily Bellwether an e-mail that says the state's Republican voters will get to pick between Newt Gingrich, Texas Gov. Rick Perry and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney. President Barack Obama is the only Democrat who filed petitions for his party's primary. So who is missing? Ron Paul, the Texas congressman who is running strong in some polls. Herman Cain
"suspended" his campaign last weekend -- the failure to file in Ohio probably means suspended meant dead. Evangelicals and social conservatives who are drawn to Minnesota U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann, who heads the Congressional Tea Party Caucus, won't see her name on the ballot. Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum also did not file by the deadline. Also MIA: former Utah Gov. John Huntsman. Meanwhile, a Quinnipiac University poll released today shows GOP voters at the moment are lining up behind Gingrich in three battleground states, including Ohio. Romney is No. 2, but both Bachmann and Paul are ahead of Perry in Ohio. The complete text of the Dec. 8 poll is
available here. An excerpt shows:
