OH-02 Dem Steve Black: 'Nothing In Our Ad Is False' About Vic Wulsin And Medical Experiments

CINCINNATI (TDB) -- Dan Herkert, the campaign manager for OH-02 Democratic congressional candidate Steve Black, has sent an e-mail and press release to The Daily Bellwether about the TV ad sharply criticizing Victoria Wulsin's work for the Heimlich Institute. Rather than summarize, here's what Herkert and the Black campaign have to say:

Bill: Below you will find a press release we emailed out today with regard to our television ad. We fully stand by this ad and I would be happy to provide you with all copies of the documents upon which it is based. Nothing in our ad is false.

We have merely exposed the fact that Dr. Wulsin is in fact under investigation by the Ohio State Medical Board and the fact that she did not report these experiments to any government body. Also, she has claimed on different occasions that she merely wrote a "literature review" for the Heimlich Institute. This so-called literature review does not cite any of the numerous articles from the New York Times, LA Times, or New England Journal of Medicine that are critical of malariotherapy. Further, her report actually lists recommendations to the Heimlich Institute for ways to continue these experiments.

We have never gone "negative" in this campaign. The public record of a candidate is indicitive of how they will perform as a Member of Congress and that record should be compared to other candidates. The truth is often harsh, but every statement that has ever come from Steve's campaign is fully based on public documents.

Below is our press release from earlier today. If you have any questions or would like copies of the documents supporting our ad, don't hesitate to call me.

Just The Facts

Today, the Steve Black for Congress campaign began airing a television ad that exposes the fact that Dr. Victoria Wulsin is currently under the cloud of an active ethics investigation by the Ohio State Medical Board. The information contained within that ad is entirely true, factual, and based on public documents. Click
here to read all relevant documents and to watch the President of the National Council Against Health Fraud explain the issues surrounding their request for this ongoing investigation.

In an effort to distract voters from her own record and the ongoing ethics investigation that currently surrounds her medical license, Victoria Wulsin's campaign has spent the past two weeks knowingly running a television ad that completely distorts the truth with regard to Steve Black's family farm. Click
here to view the documents that prove Wulsin's ad to be a complete distortion of the truth.

"The public record of a candidate is indicative of how they will perform as a Member of Congress," said Dan Herkert, Campaign Manager. "Voters should be well aware of the public record of a candidate when making a choice on Election Day. Congress has been plagued in recent years by ethics investigation after ethics investigation, from Republican Bob Ney in Ohio to Democrat William Jefferson in Louisiana. As a nation, we cannot restore public trust in our government and focus on the needs of the American people if we continue to elect public officials who are surrounded by ethical questions."

"As Democrats, we cannot beat Jean Schmidt with a candidate currently under the cloud of an active ethics investigation," continued Herkert, "and we certainly can't change Congress until we change the people we send there."

"All communications that emanate from the Steve Black for Congress campaign are true and supported by public documents," said Herkert. "As a campaign, we are happy to provide any member of the press or any voter with a copy of those documents."

  1. Bill - Would you please call Dr. Heimlich for comment? He's in the book. He should be willing to defend Dr. Wulsin and back up her version of events, right?

If you make the call, be sure and ask for the dates of her employment and whether she was paid by the Heimlich Institute or by another entity. Why? Because Deaconess, which owns the Heimlich Institute, doesn't appear to be willing or able to produce an employment record for Dr. Vic.

If she was working under the table for Dr. Hankenstein, that may of interest to the state medical board.

  4. This is short and to the point. Read it, please.

    Executive Summary: “Immunotherapy and Beyond”
Immunotherapy and Beyond is a review of scientific literature compiled by Dr. Victoria Wulsin at the request of the Heimlich Institute between August and December 2004.
Dr. Hank Heimlich, inventor of the Heimlich Maneuver, contended that AIDS, which attacks white blood cells in the human immune system, might be countered when white blood cell production was intensely stimulated in response to malaria. He found precedent for this hypothesis in vaccination—the long-established medical practice of exposing patients to disease in a controlled environment in order to enhance their bodies’ immune responses.
However, Dr. Wulsin concluded in her review that “The preponderance of evidence indicates that neither malaria nor Immunotherapy will cure HIV/AIDS.”
As Thomas Francis reported in Radar Online in November 2005, “the day after issuing a draft of her report…Wulsin was fired” by the Heimlich Institute.
In her review, Dr. Wulsin raised the following objections:
    • A review of the related scientific literature showed a “trend over time of decreasing support for Immunotherapy.”
    • There was “complexity and inconsistency of data apropos of the effect of malaria” on AIDS.
    • “Patients must be informed of – and understand - the relative costs and benefits to Immunotherapy and its alternatives. …Research protocols must be approved by local (operating) and donor (managing) institutional review boards. These authorizations should be readily available for examination by any critics, patients, potential collaborators, or others.”
In summary, Dr. Wulsin informed the Heimlich Institute that their research on Immunotherapy should not go forward unless they:
    • Clarified the ethical and scientific details of past studies.
    • Ensured that future studies conformed to strict ethical standards.
    • Acknowledged the ever-growing scientific consensus that Immunotherapy was ineffective for fighting AIDS, and were willing to engage in “transparent discussion [of their research] with scientists, physicians, and other stakeholders.”
She also warned that the Heimlich Institute would face a credibility and sustainability crisis if it continued to pursue its current path. She suggested that it consider more promising avenues of AIDS research, such as highly active antiretroviral therapy, while insisting that it could not do effective research until it overhauled its research and operating methods.
Dr. Wulsin’s involvement with the Heimlich Institute and Immunotherapy was strictly limited to this literature review. At no point was she involved in the Institute’s clinical research. Dr. Wulsin discussed her interactions with—and ultimate dismissal by—the Institute in a November 11, 2005 Radar Online article, “Outmaneuvered” ( www.radaronline.com/web-only/radar-investigates/2005/11/outmaneuvered-part-ii.php ).

  6. Vic Wulsin's "Executive Summary" was added AFTER it was published to distort the facts within her report.

    Nice try though.

  7. Not only did the Heimlich/Wulsin maleriotherapy program inject AIDS patients with the malaria parasite, they also withheld those patients' AIDS medications. It was a death sentence. And Victoria Wulsin kept quiet.

  8. An undated "Executive Summary" was added to the December 2004 Wulsin report and uploaded on the Wulsin for Congress website on September 16, 2006, along with a press release with the same date. The "Executive Summary" and press release are available here. The original report is available here.

  9. Only weeks after her lucrative managerial work with Heimlich in 2004, Wulsin declared herself for candidacy for the OH-02 congressional district. She was sure no one would ever discover her participation with Heimlich, and was paid by Heimlich through a private account. She didn't anticipate a break in the Heimlich family relationships which exposed her work. So she decided just to lie about her involvement instead.

  10. We have only Wulsin's word (valueless and unconfired by other sources) as to when she wrote the draft report (not to be confused with the "executive summary", something separate). It likely was written in 2005, quite a while after her employment with Heimlich ended. She was fired for non-productivity, not fired because of the draft report, as she claims.

  11. "we don't know who fair-a-con supports based on the comments posted. as Black's campaign has shown by their Swiftboating tactics, they will do anything to try to win, even have their own troll pose as a Wulsin supporter--you think???

About the 'investigation', don't you wonder why immediately after Dr. Wulsin's report was issued, The Heimlich Institute was banned from doing work at Deaconess Hospital--hardly a coincidence. Perhaps the reason the investigation hasn't been closed yet is because the Ohio Medical Board might be investigating Heimlich rather than Dr. Wulsin??"

Maybe taking a closer look at the Robert S. Baratz's background and case history might reveal what kind of 'expert witness' he really is--maybe the best expert witness money can buy?? How much did his 'testimony' in this Primary race cost Steve Black??

Steve Black's tactics are reprehensible and he has lost any respect REAL Dems. had for him when we tried and wanted to believe he had a true conversion from his Republican voting and donating past. What a pathetic soul and I'm not sure how he looks himself in the mirror. He's lost any respect from Dems. an honest run for this office would have provided him. The Republicans are probably very proud of him, though.

  12. I think the Dean (or should I call him "anonymous") should create a special website devoted solely to Heimlich (and Wulsin). He can post the same message every day, several times a day. But just in case people continue not to care, he can buy web ads and put them all over the web. If people still continue not to care, he can start a low power FM station and talk about it 23.5 hours a day. And in the unlikely even that he remains irrelevant, he can start a podcast. And in the unimaginable scenario that people continue to regard him as an obsessive freak on the fringe, he should write a book called Mein Kampf II: My Struggle for Righteous Truth Against the Forces of Modern Nazism.

And if publishers refuse to print it, he should accuse them of being part of the secret Heimlich cabal intent on suppressing THE TRUTH.

    ReplyDelete
  13. WestEnder: If people still continue not to care...

I know one person who cares: Brian Ross at ABC 20/20. When his crew came to Cincinnati last year, they interviewed Dr. Wulsin at length about her relationship with the Heimlich Institute. Ask her.

Presumably, ABC still has that footage. Maybe 20/20 or WCPO will eventually air it.

Thank you Dean for finally exposing who is behind the anonymous postings !

We have been saying all along the wRong wingnut whackos are way to 'green' and trying to make a name for themselves off the accomplishments of Wulsin !

    Here is the question:

Would any voter want a representative whom is so 'green' that they would jump in bed with 'kiddies' trying to make a name for themselves ?

    We think not !

The 'black mole' is a flip-flopping, wRong wingnut whacko jumping in bed with 'bloggers' whom have the mission to destroy the Dem party in the hopes of electing the whacko, Nader !

They are willing to throw their vote away based on a young, inexperienced ideology !

When the 'black mole' jumps in bed with 'kiddies' does he really expect to win a DEMOCRATIC primary ?

    lol, loL, Lol, LOL !

    Naiveté breeds Naiveté !

    MARK OUR WORDS:

The 'black mole' will not get as many votes as Justin Jeffrey received in his bid for city council and Rightfully so !

Justin, at least, has a history of concern for the core base in Cincinnati and although a differing ideology, that political diversity is encouraged, and acceptable on city council !

(We think Justin received 7,500 votes and wish he would have won. Maybe could have, if it wasn't such a weird year with way too many candidates.)

The 'black mole' has done absolutely NOTHING for DEMOCRATS, PERIOD !

The ''flip-flopping', 'black mole is trying to get DEM'S to vote for him by slamming the next congresswoman ? NOT !

The Dem's brought WULSIN within 1% of winning the district, but, 'the black mole' thinks he is the Dem's political savor after being, once again, in bed with wRong wingnut whackos (for years) as a repugnicat !

    OH, PLEASE !

The 'black mole" was silent, even on this swift-boat Wulsin rhetoric, until he became a pandering, self-serving, opportunist, PERIOD !

Not only does the 'black mole' lack judgment, he also lacks CHARACTER !

We all know Baratz's flight to town was paid for by Black. Black & Haap have teamed up to push this story forward.

Typical wRong wingnut whacko, 'black mole' supporter with weak attempts to spew the elephant dung propaganda, PERIOD !

    Here are your answers:

If this has been in the news, FOR TEN YEARS, then how is anyone going to use Wulsin as a scapegoat ?

Where was every doctor, who reads the articles, when it came to filing complaints ?

So, every doctor in the country is exonerated, but, Wulsin, is not ?

Where was the baratz-whack, ten years ago, with his frivolous complaints ?

Why hasn't baratz filed a complaint against HI and hindlick ?

Why hasn't the 'black mole', as attorney, filed a federal temporary and permanent injunction against HI and hindlick (after all a temporary injunction is heard within 3 days in Ohio) ?

Even a wRong wingnut whacko can determine this is nothing more than opportunistic, swift-boat rhetoric for self-serving political mud-slinging !

If the 'black mole' was Soooooooooo, concerned about this issue then he would have pro-bono filed for injunctions with baratz as plaintiff !

  20. Wulsin's political career is dead on arrival. Even if she manages to get through the Primary on inertia, this issue will continue to haunt her through the general. Her campaign has blown it big time in the way they have handled this issue. Put a fork in the political future of Vic Wulsin! Not even malariotherapy can save her.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Wulsin will pull thru this and Black, Baratz et al will be exposed for what they are--sleazy individuals who will do ANYTHING to accomplish their ends. Black's political career is over-- destroyed by his own ego and his resulting unscrupulous, despicable actions. Dr. Wulsin will come thru this a stronger candidate knowing what the rotten opposition will try to throw at her. Black's desperation caused him to choose to engage in swift-boating and a reprehensible smear campaign against his opponent based on distorted information and outright lies; he could have just as easily chosen to compete in this race in a reputable, honest manner and let the best candidate win, even if it turned out to be him. His stooping to this level of dishonesty and desperation tells us a lot about the type of person Steve Black is and elected official he would be--terrible, vindictive, dishonest, selfish, mean, unscrupulous. Those certainly aren't qualities I want in any elected official or any person with whom I would associate. Steve Black needs to go back to the Republican Party from where he came. And the sooner the better. Good riddance.

  23. Why are Wulsin loyalists so blind in defending what is so clearly unethical behavior? If the charges against Vic amount to nothing, why hasn't the Ohio Medical Board dismissed them? Why did she recommend renaming malariotherapy to "immunotherapy". Vic is cooked. Her politcal career is over. Even if she wins the primary through inertia and name recognition, Jean Schmidt will walk all over her. Unfortunatley, Vic Wulsin is leading the Democratic Party down the drain in District 2. Her campaign has done a terrible job of handling this issue.

  24. Why are Black supporters so blindly defending Black's so clearly unethical behavior?? Are they are wearing blinders or drinking too much of his kool-aid? Perhaps the investigation hasn't been closed because the Board is not investigating Vic Wulsin, but the Heimlich Institute? It's not clear which charges are being investigated and against whom.
Black's political career is over. His desperate and pathetic tactics have shown us his true colors: black to the core.
Also, about Jean Schmidt walking all over anyone---she has her own skeletons in her closet, like her votes against SCHIP, Vet benefits, school loan reform, mortgage relief, her Walter Reed Veterans Hospital scandal blame game mess-up, ... on and on it goes.

  26. Quackbusters: "Bullys" Barrett, Baratz, Sued For 1.3 Million in Canada...
Opinion by Consumer Advocate Tim Bolen

    December 12th, 2003

Bullying isn't all that profitable these days. In fact, as self named "quackbusters" Stephen Barrett (quackwatch.com), and Bobbie Baratz (NCAHF.org), are finding out, it can, and will, be downright expensive...

Quackbusters like to bully people. It's all they have. It's the megalomaniac thing to do... Why? Facts, logic, and social reality, are not on their side, arguing the issues surrounding North America's rush away from "conventional medicine" towards what has been called "Alternative Medicine."

Just north of Toronto, Ontario, Canada by two-and-a-half hours, is the little town of Bracebridge, Ontario. It's there that Stephen Barrett, and Robert S. Baratz, North America's two top VISIBLE quackbusters, have been set down for civil trial - for their misbehavior. In essence, Barrett, and Baratz, are getting their noses bloodied again - in full view of the general public.

According to court documents recently filed in Canada, Barrett and Baratz's "bullying" was listed in 86 separate "claims," with 176 separate "allegations," 463 requests to admit, backed by a demand for authenticity of 47 documents.

Also, is a demand that Barrett, and Baratz, EACH, put up $25,000 to cover the costs of the case.

    What the case is about...

Stephen Barrett, in my opinion, has some SERIOUS mental problems. I believe he sees himself as a God - an ultimate authority on everything within his view; health care, health fraud, law, libel law, religion, you-name-it... and this, without any qualification, training, learning, certification, etc. He just "says he is," and for him, that's enough. And, Barrett's view of it all, is from the basement of his home in Allentown, Pennsylvania.

Which is why, in his lawsuit against me, I'm demanding that Barrett submit to a complete Medical and Psychiatric evaluation with doctors of my choice. For the Medical exam, besides blood and urine analysis, we'll need the details from a hair analysis, a saliva sample, autonomic response testing (Kinesiology), and we'll want to see if he has mercury in his mouth.

In Canada, Barrett, accompanied by his dubious sidekick, Bobbie Baratz, the heir-apparent to the quackbuster throne, sued Wayne Obie, and his wife Francis Perrin, for supposedly defaming them by publishing, or allowing to be published, articles that I, Tim Bolen wrote. Barrett, and Baratz, are, in fact, suing Wayne and Francis, NOT for what I, Tim Bolen wrote in the articles, but for Barrett's INTERPRETATION of what I wrote. Barrett's God-Proclamation of what I wrote.

Canadians, Wayne Obie, and Francis Perrin, in response to an attack by Barrett and Baratz, have decided to call a spade a spade - and did so in a massive lawsuit against the twosome. Frankly, Wayne and Francis did what a whole lot of us should have already done - they identified the REAL problem with the self-styled "quackbusters," and are going after it. I'll tell you more about the case, and its importance to the North American Health Freedom Movement, in another newsletter.

Paperwork in the case against the acid duo, runs into the thousands of pages. Leafing through the documents turns up a myriad of INTERESTING allegations, some of which I'll put on this page for your edification and amusement.

    For instance, Court Documents show:

The sole purpose of the activities of Barrett & Baratz are to discredit and cause damage and harm to health care practitioners and businesses that make alternative health therapies or products available, and advocates of non-allopathic therapies and health freedom.

Barrett and Baratz have falsely and fraudulently held themselves out as experts in the scientific fields of alternative complementary medicine.

Barrett uses predatory and deceptive practices designed to cause harm and damage to supporters and providers of alternative health services and products.

Both Stephen Barrett and Robert Baratz are vexatious litigants who use the court system to advance their agendas and the agendas of their privately owned businesses, which promote allopathic medicine, and discredit any health care treatment or product that is considered complementary or alternative treatment.

NCAHF is the acronym for National Council against Health Fraud. The NCAHF is a front organization used by Barrett, Baratz and their other associates whose purpose is to solicit jobs so that they can act as expert witnesses against doctors who practice alternative and complementary treatment methods.

Barrett operates numerous web sites including Quackwatch.com, Chirowatch.com., ratbags.com and Quackwatch.org . The sole purpose of these web sites is to discredit health care professionals who practice alternative and complementary medicine. These web sites discredit complementary medicine and encourage people to report doctors who practice alternative medicine, thus providing Barrett , Baratz and their associates with a constant stream of potential cases that can be prosecuted thus providing them with opportunities to act as expert witnesses on behalf of NCAHF, their privately owned company.

Quackwatch.com., Quackwatch.org and Ratbags.com all provide links to NCAHF, and provide the false appearance of NCAHF being an impartial and regulatory type body, when in fact, it is not.

The growing popularity of alternative therapy is a constant threat to Barrett, Baratz and their business interests, and the interests of the existing medical and pharmaceutical status quo.

The debate over allopathic care vs. alternative health care is and will continue to be the subject of hot and emotional debate, similar to that of politics and religion. Barrett uses the court system and threats of legal action to bait, control and get leverage over what others say about him, his opinions, and qualifications.

    About Civil Rights...

Barrett has interfered with the civil rights of numerous Canadians and Americans, in his efforts to have his critics silenced.

Barrett’s actions have resulted in loss of income and damages to numerous parties in Ontario.

Barrett routinely sends letters of demand for money to settle the threat of legal action, under the guise of e-mail communications sent as either “Private”, “copy written” and /or “Without Prejudice”. :Letter from Julia E. Holland copied to Robert Armstrong on behalf of Barrett and Baratz is attached as Exhibit “N”

Neither Barrett, Baratz or NCAHF contradict quackbuster, quackwatch, quackfiles, ratbags information anywhere on the internet, or in any publication anywhere.

Baratz stated that the power of prayer is the same as satanic worship.

    About Conspiracy...

Quackwatch, and National Council against Health Fraud although independently incorporated, are one of the same, in that they have common directors, administrators, members, contributors and beliefs and collaborate together to the benefit of Barrett, Baratz and their other associates.

NCAHF is a private organization controlled by Barrett, Baratz and other of their associates whose sole purpose is to lend credibility to the activities, opinions and publications written by Barrett, Robert Baratz and it’s other members, so as to enhance their income making opportunities through payment of expert witness fees, sales of their publications and contributions solicited on their web sites.

The Quackwatch, Quackbusters, Ratbags, NCAHF and other of Barrett’s and Baratz’s, and their members and shareholders web sites, are all interlinked and support in one way or another, each other.

    About Qualifications...

Barrett was disqualified as an expert witness in New York, when he was forced to admit under oath that he was never board certified.

Barrett using his NCAHF front led a legal action against 39 Defendants in California, claiming that the 39 defendants were committing fraud, because according to them , alternative medicine proponents do not have scientific proof of their claims.

Baratz testified under oath against a medical doctor in Wisconsin, without having credentials recommended by the American Medical Association to do so and without any knowledge about the field of expertise in which the Wisconsin Doctor was involved.

Baratz has various versions of his CV, with conflicting and inaccurate information.

Barrett once bragged to me that he had 4 libel suits in progress against 10 defendants and that he would was going to be filing against two more defendants within 2 months and had not decided if I was worth suing yet.

Barrett’s web site is defamatory against me and Talkinternational.com and states that the Talkinternational.com web site promotes fraud in dentistry.

    About Abusing the Legal System...

The Plaintiffs are not unknown to litigation and have commenced and been involved in numerous legal actions in the United States against persons who hold opinions contrary to those of the Plaintiffs and or the interests whom the Plaintiffs represent.

As such the Plaintiffs are professional litigants in that they routinely file lawsuits and are involved in lawsuits for the sole purpose of advancing their agendas and creating expense and thereby harassing person involved in integrative and alternative health therapies. This is another vexatious action brought by the Plaintiffs.

The Plaintiff Barrett has stated publicly that "he is the media" and as such under U.S. Law, he has no claim for defamation.

The Plaintiffs Barrett and Baratz are public figures in the United States , and have chosen Ontario to claim defamation for this article because they cannot do so in the U.S.

The Plaintiffs have chosen to bring this action in Canada , notwithstanding the fact that their claim involves alleged publication of defamatory material on an Internet site. The Internet is ubiquitous and international in nature, it is unregulated by any governmental authority. However, the largest potential audience for any Internet web site is in the United States . As such, the Plaintiffs have chosen to bring an action against the Defendants in this jurisdiction since their attempts to bring similar lawsuits in the United States have not been and will not be successful.

The Plaintiffs advocate on behalf of business interests in competition to those of clients of the Defendant Obie and ones promoting integrative or alternative health therapies and mercury free dentistry. Their tactics are to challenge and discredit legitimate alternative health modalities and they have targeted individuals and businesses that advocate or are in the business of making alternative, integrative and progressive medical therapies available.

The Plaintiffs are residents of the United States . The Defendants thereby request that the Court make a substantial Order for security for costs against the Plaintiffs herein in consequence of their predilection for engaging in similar litigation in the United States , wherein the Courts there are not typically prone to awarding costs against unsuccessful Plaintiffs who engage in frivolous or vexatious litigation.

    What happens next?...

Wayne and Francis have sent Barrett, and Baratz, DEMANDS for information, and Request to Admit documents - which they have twenty days to respond to. For instance, among the 463 facts Barrett, and Baratz, will be queried about:

Baratz filed suit against Dean Richard Huber who was over 70 years old after Baratz ran into the back of the Dean’s car while jogging in October 1992.

Baratz and Dr. Driscol, a director at Harvard Health, both mutually agreed in writing that Baratz does not have a high level of medical competency.

Barrett, Baratz, NCAHF & Quackwatch are all opposed to the practice of acupuncture.

There are no patient testimonials or other information on the internet or otherwise in the public domain positively identifying the quality of care Barrett provided to his patients, while practicing medicine.

There are no patient testimonials or other information on the internet or otherwise in the public domain positively identifying the quality of care Baratz provided to his patients, while practicing medicine.

There is significant evidence that Baratz’s career as a practicing medical doctor and dentist was less than extraordinary.

    Stay tuned...

  28. Vic Wulsin has done a great job making a national joke out of the OH-02 Congressional Race! She is a pathetic candidate who would embarass the voters of this district with her crazy ideas and past association with Heimlich/Malariotherapy.

    From the Rothenberg Political Report:

"But for a candidate running for the third time, Wulsin is, to put it mildly, scattered in her thinking. For example, she’s an anti-war candidate who says that she isn’t sure how she would have voted on the supplemental spending bill that has funded the war.

Wulsin ran a TV spot last month in which she pledged, “As your Representative, I will refuse Congressional health care until Congress does its job and passes affordable health care for all.”

Sounds like quite a sacrifice, doesn’t it? Of course, it isn’t, since Wulsin is covered under her husband’s “gold-plated” health care plan. When I asked her about this, she talked about the symbolism of her stand and the fact that Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland (D) made the same pledge previously.

Then, toward the end of the interview, with half a dozen other reporters present, Wulsin referred to her son as “a nice liberal, like his mother.” Hmmm.

When asked about that comment, Wulsin went through a lengthy verbal contortion to try to explain that she really is both conservative and liberal. “What I mean by [liberal],” said the pro-abortion rights Democrat at one point, “is that I want change.”

But what, asked a reporter, did she mean when she said that she was conservative on family issues? “I think marriage is great. I think motherhood and fatherhood is great,” she explained.

What about gay marriage? “I don’t think that the federal government should tell any church what to do or who to marry. I’m all for equal rights,” said Wulsin, digging herself deeper.

Anyway, Wulsin might well get elected to Congress. But if she does, it’s only because of Schmidt."
