Insiders Say Heimlich's Wife Recruited By Kasich Forces In Bid To Oust Ohio GOP Chair: Tea Party, Evangelicals Snubbed In Showdown

Is Kasich Creating A Palace Guard in Ohio GOP?
CINCINNATI (TDB) -- There is suspicion, growing agitation and volatilty over the governor's seeming attempt to outgun the locals and create an inner circle resembling a politburo or palace guard.  Republican insiders report that Gov. John Kasich has lined up Rebecca Heimlich as a candidate for an Ohio Republican Party state central committee seat in SW Ohio.  Heimlich is the spouse of former Hamilton County Commissioner Phil Heimlich, whose political career has been moribund but whose lobbying career seems to be blossoming.  Rebecca Heimlich filed last week to run in District 8, which covers Warren and eastern Hamilton counties, amid suspicions her job on the Central Committee will be to back Kasich and gain favor for her husband.
Kasich is trying to dump State GOP Chair Kevin DeWine, a power play that is growing bitter and angering Republicans in the run up to the 2012 presidential election versus Barack Obama.  Democrats, of course, are enjoying the fray from the sidelines and hope it gets worse.  There are signs their wishes are coming true.  By recruiting Rebecca Heimlich, the Kasich forces put the squeeze on two state central committee candidates who had long made plans to run for the spot.  Both may think that Rebecca Heimlich's appearance on the GOP ballot undercuts their work.  And one of the candidates, Tea Party activist Maggi Cook, reportedly had her job at a construction industry trade association pressured because she wouldn't pull out of the race.  The Daily Bellwether has been told that Cook was ballistic Friday after learning Kasich's backers had urged her bosses to get her to quit the District 8 GOP central committee contest.  And anonymous e-mails have been flying:

"Thought you’d be interested in the backers of Rebecca Heimlich’s entry into this race – Kasich. Apparently they’ve abandoned their cheerleader, Lori Viars, in favor of a 'name' that they hope will win the seat.  Heimlich, who wouldn’t be in the race if her last name was still Simpson, has never run for PE, doesn’t sit on any party committees, has not worked on any campaigns except for her husband’s. And that worked out well.  Kasich’s people, in an effort to clear the decks, called another candidates job – that’s right, called someone in her chain of command, in an effort to push the only non-committed candidate out of the race. Apparently, wanting to defeat Sen Brown and not turn Ohio blue in 2012 is not the Kasich priority."

Lori Viars, whose name is mentioned in the e-mail, is a Christian Right social conservative and longtime Republican activist from Lebanon who filed for the central committee seat.  Viars heads the Family First PAC and has been described as ardent in her support of Kasich during the 2010 governor's race against Democrat Ted Strickland. Some GOP'ers in SW Ohio say she was thrown under the bus when Rebecca Heimlich was recruited for the showdown against Kevin DeWine.  As for DeWine, he told central committee members last week that Kasich's effort to dump him could help put Obama back in the White House:

“I’ve spoken with many of you over the last few weeks as the governor’s political team and others have begun aggressively recruiting candidates to challenge those of you in the room. Your emotions range from curiosity to disappointment to annoyance to anger, fear, and disgust. . . If we do not address the elephant in the room, then the donkey in the White House will win four more years.”

[UPDATE: 1:12 p.m. -- Republican blogger Matt Hurley calls the GOP's fight over the state party chairmanship fratricide. He also views the recruitment of Rebecca Heimlich as a move "affording the Republican Party an opportunity to piss off social conservatives, fiscal conservatives and the Tea Party." ]

[UPDATE 12/13/2011 9:14 a.m. -- "The Republicans are knifing each other in the back," says Ohio Daily, contending that Gov. Kasich's "lust for power" is likely to alienate the loyal GOP'ers who do all the work on the ground when campaign season comes around.]

[UPDATE 12/13/2011 9:21 a.m. -- Bizzyblog's Tom Blumer says Kevin DeWine should resign and get out of the governor's way.  Blumer:  "The logic is inescapable, and irrefutable.  Surprise us, Kevin. Do the honorable thing. YOU are why the problem exists. YOU are the one who has been sewing party disunity and undercutting John Kasich (and yes, there is proof that you have been lying). YOU should go."]

  2. You mean "Heimlich's wife." If this fight continues for the ORP chairmanship, it has to help the Democrats this year. Remember the old toast, "Confusion to the Enemy." As a Democrat, I'll be saying that a lot over the holidays. To heck with Cheers.

  3. Harry Truman once said, "Never kick a fresh turd on a hot day." Kasich stuck his foot in it. The crap is flying.

  4. Maggi Cook ran Mike Wilson's campaign against Connie Pillich. Maggi's hard working. A genuine Republican/Tea Party activist while Heimlich's a rent-a-name.

  9. I think the Kock Bros. are an oligarchy trying to take over the country, or at least keep the status quo of rich getting richer. Ok, so maybe I am paranoid, but, to paraphase Nixon, that doesn't mean that they're not out to get us. If the Republic is not dead, it has at least taken a serious hit and is having a standing 8 count. The sooner it's recognized, the better. That would be an "informed citizenry".

So then you're saying that all County Assistant Prosecutors and Public Defenders have "failed legal careers"? Pretty elitist of you.

You missed the point. She started at two prominent brown shoe law firms, then her career fell off the cliff. Did something happen.

But if you believe that the same woman who now works to disembowel the public sector on behalf of the Brothers Koch left what might have been a lucrative career in private practice because she felt the call to public service at $19/hour, I have a bridge in Brooklyn to sell you.

  12. Sorry, left out the question mark. Should have been, "Did something happen?"

  13. I'll tell you why Rebecca lost those jobs with those big law firms; her Husband lost his powerful office. Those firms only employed Rebecca because they were trying to curry favor with Hemlich (aka trading in influence). Rebecca is a mediocre lawyer and once it became clear that Heimlich's political career was over, Rebecca was shown the door.

Piffle. It would help if you read the material and knew your dates: http://scr.bi/gtZfzh

According to her resume, Rebecca Heimlich worked at Squire, Sanders & Dempsey through May 2001. Her husband held office through year 2006, his last position being president of the Hamilton County Commission.

    "Rebecca is a mediocre lawyer...."

Probably closer to the mark. In any case, if Bill Sloat's sources have it right, she'll be the subject of more media scrutiny in days to come.

    If that happens, bring popcorn.

  15. Anyone have the full list of the races that will determine this thing? Would love to get our hands on it.

  16. If anyone is interested into looking into Ms. Cook's past you will discover a laundry list of legal and moral issues. She is the representation of a true teabagger. Dishonest.

  17. GOP- the "Grand One Percent" . The Kasich script was written years ago by the TV show "Dallas". I just love to watch the misery of the wealthy by their own greed.
